Amie Street teams with The Orchard

Music distributor, The Orchard, has struck a deal with digital music service Amie Street to add over one million new tracks to the online service.

Similar in scope to eMusic, Amie Street specialises in indie music, offering tracks at around 98 cents, depending on how many times a track has been downloaded.

This news means Amie Street’s catalogue now covers over 2500 labels. Whether it can begin to make a positive dent in the business of much larger companies such as eMusic, remains to be seen.

Gym Class Heroes are an American band from Geneva, New York. The group formed when Travis “Schleprok” McCoy met drummer Matt McGinley and decided to make a band.

Onloq.com, an online entertainment network, was interested and later did a video tour blog with Gym Class Heroes on Riding Shotgun, their video tour blog show.

After hearing the song “Taxi Driver”, Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy invited the band to one of his shows. Travis later said that Stump’s support, coupled with the label’s touring ethics and family atmosphere, led the band to signing with Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen.[2] Gym Class Heroes appeared on the Warped Tour in the summer of 2005 and 2006. During the tour, the band held a contest for fans to “pimp out” their myspace pages “gym class” style. The band has also been confirmed for the entire 2008 Vans Warped Tour.

The bands music is also featured on the EA Sports game Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008.

British Sea Power

British Sea Power are a four-man indie rock band based in Brighton, England, although three of the band hail originally from Kendal in Cumbria

British Sea Power’s Yan, Hamilton and Wood are school friends from Kendal in Cumbria. A few years later Hamilton and Woody joined them and formed a band. They have since been joined by Abi Fry, who plays viola for the band.

In Brighton, BSP amassed a strong local following, due mainly to their own club night called “Club Sea Power”. Geoff Travis of Rough Trade Records saw the band live and in September 2001 signed them to his label. The Decline of British Sea Power, the band’s debut album, was released in June 2003 to critical acclaim. A single from the album, “Carrion”, became the band’s first Top 40 single.

It showcased a more accessible, produced sound and charted at #13 in the UK Albums Chart. Lead single “It Ended on an Oily Stage” charted at #18 in the UK Singles Chart a week earlier.

British Sea Power have a reputation for elaborate and well-thought out live shows and won the 2004 Time Out London Live Band of the Year award. At the beginning of 2006, it was announced that Eamon had left British Sea Power to concentrate on his own band Brakes . In October 2007, the band went on tour throughout the east coast of America to showcase their new 5-track EP Krankenhaus?. The band played “No Lucifer” on The Late Show with David Letterman on the 12th of March 2008.

Kimya Dawson

Kimya Dawson became well known as the female counterpart to Adam Green in the band The Moldy Peaches. Since the Moldy Peaches went on hiatus in 2004 Dawson has released a string of lo-fi homemade albums and toured widely in North America and Europe.

Dawson recently finished work on Alphabutt, a new album of children’s music she hopes to release in August 2008.

Soundtrack work

In 2008 Dawson contributed the song “Anthrax” - about 9-11 - to the soundtrack of the Body of War documentary.

A number of Dawson’s songs are included on the Juno soundtrack, released in December 2007. Composer Mateo Messina also based the film’s score on Dawson’s music.

The soundtrack album, after two weeks topping Billboard’s Digital Albums chart, reached #8 on the Billboard 200 in its first week of release. In its first full week of physical release the album sold 68,000 copies, reaching #3 on the Soundscan album chart. Dawson has two new songs on a follow-up album Juno B-Sides: Almost Adopted Songs due April 8 via iTunes.

Dawson is well-connected with many other musicians, appearing in songs by Ben Kweller, They Might Be Giants, The Mountain Goats, John Wayne Shot Me and The Terrordactyls. The Third Eye Blind track entitled Self-Righteous on their album, Out of the Vein features a duet with Dawson and Third Eye Blind’s lead singer Stephan Jenkins. Regina Spektor collaborated with Dawson on the song ‘Fire’ on the Hidden Vagenda album. Kimya Dawson also collaborated with fellow antifolk Jeffrey Lewis.

Personal life

A sometime resident of Bedford Hills, New York, Dawson moved in December 2005 — with her mother, father, brother (Akida Junglefoot Dawson), and nephew — to Seattle, Washington.

Del the Funky Homosapien (Del tha Funkee Homosapien) and his crew, the Hieroglyphics came out as a markedly non-gansta response to a burgeoning West Coast scene. After being put on at the tender age of 17 by his cousin Ice Cube, Del released two records on Elektra, I Wish My Brother George Was Here (1991) and No Need For Alarm (1993).

The album No Need for Alarm is still considered one of the greatest albums ever to come out of Del, Hieroglyphics, or Oakland, and is highly regarded as one of the all time classic albums of hip hop. The instrumental pressings of this record is considered the “holy grail” of hiphop instrumental albums, due to the quality of production on the album and also due to its extremely limited pressing.

Del’s third solo album Future Development became available in 1998. Future Development was re-released in 2002 under the Hieroglyphics Imperium label. Del also released another collaborative work with the Hieroglyphics crew in 1998, 3rd Eye Vision, it was the Hieroglyphics crew’s first album. Two years later, Del released his fourth solo album, Both Sides of the Brain, as well as Deltron 3030 which was a collaborative work with artists Dan “the Automator” Nakamura and Kid Koala. Del collaborated with pop-group Gorillaz for two songs on their debut album, both of which became singles: “Clint Eastwood” and “Rock the House”. When Del was not invited to work on the Demon Days album, a story was written that Del and the other spirits that possessed Russel were exorcised in 2003.

In 2004 Elektra released The Best of Del The Funky Homosapien: The Elektra Years without the approval of Del. In 2000, the song “Jaw Gymnastics”, featuring Casual, was featured in the game Knockout Kings. In 2003, the song “Positive Contact” from Deltron 3030 was featured in the game Tony Hawk’s Underground. In 2005, the song “At the Helm” featuring Hieroglyphics was featured in the game Tony Hawk’s Project 8. Also, his song “Burnt” was featured in Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland.

Del has also had many songs featured in snowboarding movies. Current status on Del’s new albums is that 11th Hour will be released first, with the new Deltron album, Deltron Event II being released afterwards. Both albums are expected to be released in 2008.

On November 6, 2007 there was a post on the Definitive Jux website that stated Del had signed with Definitive Jux.

Del’s impact on the music world did not end with his solo work of even the albums his label released. It’s amazing to get a chance to release Del’s vision on Jux. The 11th Hour 100% Del. Conceived and produced completely by the man himself. Del is currently touring the U.S. on the 11th Hour Tour.

Rancid

One of the cornerstone punk bands of the ’90s, Rancid’s unabashedly classicist sound drew heavily from the Clash’s early records, echoing their left-leaning politics and fascination with ska, while adding a dash of essential hardcore crunch.

Rancid is a punk band with an obvious reggae influence. The band was formed by Armstrong, Freeman, and former drummer Brett Reed, who left the band in 2006 and was replaced by Branden Steineckert. Frederiksen joined Rancid in 1993 when the band was searching for a second guitar player.

As of 2007, Rancid has been working on a studio album expected to be released in June 2008 on Hellcat Records.

Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman had been playing together in the seminal ska punk band Operation Ivy from 1987-1989. Rancid’s first recorded release was a 1992 EP for Operation Ivy’s old label Lookout! Records. Rancid would release their self titled debut album for Epitaph in 1993.

While Rancid was writing for a follow-up album, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, a friend of the band, joined them to co-write the song “Radio”. Frederiksen played with the band on 1994’s Let’s Go. The album failed to meet the success of Rancid’s previous two albums and peaked at number 68 on the billboard charts.

Also that year, all four members of the band played on BYO Split Series, Vol. 3, a split album with NOFX in which Rancid covered NOFX songs and NOFX covered Rancid songs.

After a break from touring in 2001, Rancid returned to the studio with Gurewitz in 2002 to record their sixth album, Indestructible, which was released on August 19, 2003 on Hellcat Records. It features the hit song “Fall Back Down”, and was Rancid’s highest charting album ever, peaking at number 15.

Hiatus (2004-2005)

In 2004, after a tour for Indestructible, Rancid went on an extensive hiatus. Frederiksen continued working with his side band Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards and released its second album, Viking, in 2004.

Records roster, in September 2006, Rancid pulled their self-titled EP from the catalog.
